The Cuchilla de San Juan cooperative, with its 183 dedicated coffee farmers in Belén De Umbría, Risaralda, Colombia, cultivates coffee beans with an unquenchable passion, resulting in coffee celebrated worldwide for its unique flavor profile.
However, with glory comes challenge. Coffee waste, or pulp, polluted local waterways and threatened the fragile ecosystem. Driven by responsibility, the cooperative tirelessly sought a solution.
Amucafe: Revolutionizing Sustainability Through Coffee Waste
A glimmer of hope emerged in the form of Amucafe. A group of visionary women within the cooperative saw an opportunity where others saw a problem. They transformed coffee waste into valuable organic fertilizer, using diligent worms and careful composting. The pulp became a rich nutrient source for local agriculture, closing the sustainability loop.
Supported by the cooperative and local government, Amucafe grew into a beacon of innovation and impact. With 28 compost beds, they process 10% of the coffee waste, driven by 11 dedicated members who dream of making an even greater impact. Their ambition? To expand to 100 square meters of composting space with microorganisms, maximizing efficiency and reducing their ecological footprint.
